2021 Letter – Year in Review

December, 2021

Dear Friend,

We hope that you and your loved ones are well. As this year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support and to share what we have been able to accomplish together through TIME’S UP!’s environmental activism and community events. Every day, more people become more aware of the urgency of climate change and their actions’ effects on conditions locally and globally. The president has even acknowledged that climate change is the “number one issue facing humanity.” As we celebrate the beginning of another year, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our annual Future Positive New Year’s Eve Bike Ride and outdoor after party.

We should all be very proud of ourselves. Despite the current negative and divisive climate, we have been able to keep our events and campaigns positive.  Additionally, our volunteers have helped keep many vital community spaces open to the public even throughout this pandemic.

As uprisings and social movements enlighten millions to the importance of social justice and sustainable practices across all facets of life, our 34 years of grassroots experience allow us to continue to make headway and inspire. As we enter 2022, we’re excited to continue this progress and support the growth of the bike community in NYC.

TIME’S UP! has spent much of 2021 addressing the most urgent needs in our community. The good news is that we continue to see our past campaigns paying off, helping to improve our cities and support essential workers. TIME’S UP!’s safe group bike rides have increased biking and created a critical mass of cyclists – ultimately putting pressure on the city to implement the increased bicycle infrastructure that we have today. As a result, NYC has seen a 33% increase in cycling this year.

We have also helped to create legislation to improve conditions for 65,000+ delivery workers by setting parameters on deliveries, increasing minimum wage and wage transparency, and allowing workers to use restaurant bathrooms–and we will build upon this momentum in the coming year. Additionally, the pedicab industry that we helped launch in 1994 has not only reduced carbon emissions, but has introduced over 2,000 new green jobs. Our long-term support of the pedicab industry has helped the number of pedicabs in NYC  surpass 1,000.

Urban communities everywhere have taken it upon themselves to create auto-free zones in their neighborhoods, showing us that positive action here influences positive action everywhere. Your support and volunteer assistance allows us to maintain this motion towards sustainable urban design. Along with our partner institution, The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space, we will continue to host garden green-ups and community workshops on composting, honey-beekeeping, medicinal herbs, and bike-repair. We’re able to continue organizing and fighting to save these gardens and keep them in community hands, thanks to you.

Your continued tax-deductible support for TIME’S UP! will help our educational and outreach efforts remain sustainable through 2022, and grow to reach even more members of our community. The Planet needs us!

Happy holidays and best wishes,
