Delancey Street safety improvements are barely out the door, and some are already taking issue with the design. Specifically the Times Up environmental organization with regard to the bike lane along this heavily-trafficked corridor.

Times Up recently plastered the Williamsburg Bridge plaza with flyers proposing an alternative design for the approach. In their own words, the safest access for bicyclists and pedestrians is to “enter and exit the bridge from the side, not the middle,” an obvious choke point aptly dubbed the “Death Wall.” The schematic on each printout illustrates a bicycle path along the south side of Delancey with an elevated ramp connecting to the span further east.

The designers also took some liberties with the long-fallow SPURA lots, asserting that a few of the parcels should be converted to green space, and even include an educational center for the group.

The re-imagined bike path and park space seem like little more than wishful thinking…
