Bicycle-safety advocates yesterday solemnly rode to each of the 14 spots around the city where cyclists were killed by cars in 2006, leaving behind white “ghost bikes” to memorialize the victims.
“We must end the Wild West atmosphere on city streets,” said Noah Budnick, a spokesman for Transportation Alternatives.
The 150 bike riders visited each of the crash sites in Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn. The ride ended about 5:30 p.m. at Lafayette and Houston.
At each of the sites, riders left a chained “ghost bike” painted white and laced with flowers, and a plaque.
Audrey Anderson, the mother of 14-year-old biker Andre Anderson, who was killed Sept. 24, 2005, said, “This is a way to keep my son’s memory alive.”
