The Uptown Bridges by Night Ride is back to celebrate new bike crossings, including the beautifully restored High Bridge over the Harlem River and the brand-new Randall’s Island Connector over the Bronx Kill. We’ll also cross the Little Hell Gate Inlet and make stops in Manhattan, Wards and Randall’s Island, and the Bronx. In addition to uncovering bicycle access points and taking in stunning sunset vistas, we’ll explore various types of waterfront development and marine and shore ecosystems.

Though it’s just 6 miles long, the Harlem River is crossed by 14 bridges, making it the most-bridged waterway of that length in the world. Our ride will take us to NYC’s oldest and newest bridges and over four car-free spans as we cross between islands and mainland.

The last crossing will leave us in the dark in Inwood Hill Park in Manhattan, from which some people will head to the subway and others will ride south along the Hudson River Greenway, through Harlem, and eventually back to the start location. Distance to last bridge: 20 miles. Total round-trip distance: approximately 30 miles.

Bring: lights, snacks, water, and an empty bladder. Be prepared for a fun, sociable evening as we navigate a veritable urban obstacle course, including a bit of gravel, some stairs, hills, broken glass, pot-holed roadways, poor lighting, “walk your bike” signs, an NYCFC game at Yankee Stadium, and stretches of heavy traffic. Make sure that your bike is in good working order and that you are comfortable riding at a speed of 13 mph on flat terrain. We will need to stay together and keep moving; anyone with time-consuming mechanical problems may be directed to the nearest subway.
