School’s out for summer, and the cars will be out of Central Park for good! Join with old friends and make some new ones as we celebrate victory in this decades-long, people-powered campaign to peacefully remove internal combustion from Central Park. The last cars will be exiting at 7:00 p.m., at which time we’ll revel in the new possibilities for this public space. Bring noisemakers, signs, and other celebratory items along with your non-polluting wheels.

Having an auto-free Central Park is a campaign that Time’s Up has been working on for over 25 years. In the past we had successfully gotten entrances and exits closed to the park and reduced car hours but now finally we are getting a total ban of cars from Central Park’s loop road. At the beginning of the year Prospect Park became auto-free and now Central Park, with hopefully other cities to follow.

In another amazing turn of events, the pedi-cab industry, which Time’s Up volunteers helped to get off the ground, will still be able to use the loop road in Central Park. So bicycle transportation will replace polluting cars in one of the most famous parks in the world. Hopefully this will spread to other parks and other cities and beyond. Check out these videos of CNN coverage of the Central Park Traffic Calming Ride from years ago and Time’s Up’s Prospect Park Traffic Calming Ride. Thanks for everybody who supported this long-term campaign!
