BNC Provisional Calendar

Bike National Convention
The Bike National Convention is over a week of bicycle-related events,
some of which are regular TIME’S UP! events, some have proven themselves during 

Bike Summer 2003 in New York City
, and some of which are first run, unique events. We are also open to anyone who
wishes to plan bike-related events with us, so please check out the form at the bottom of the page to send us an event. [form has been deactivated]

Friday, August 20th

  • Prospect Park Traffic Calming Ride 6:00pm-7:00pm. Grand Army Plaza.

    Demonstration to get cars out of Prospect Park. Ride around the park loop to slow traffic,
    and celebrate when the park closes to automobiles.

  • Cyclone Ride 7:00pm. Manhattan side of Brooklyn Bridge.

    Enjoy a relaxed ride with TIME’S UP! from Manhattan to Coney Island for rides,
    sandy beaches, fireworks, hot dogs, and cool ocean waters.

Saturday, August 21st

  • Bike Tour of NYC War Profiteers 12:00pm. Park in front of Plaza Hotel, 59th St./5th Ave. Take a
    tour of the offices of Manhattan’s Corporate war profiteers and
    criminals.
  • Small Wheeled bike race 4:30pm.
    Central Park 72nd St. transverse, mid park at Bethesda Terrace. Spin your little wheels
    on a course drawn up by cyclist extraordinaire Steve Klein. Your wheels should measure
    less than 20 inches, but bigger wheeled spectators are welcome.
  • History, Mystery, Murder, and Money Tour 10:00pm. Manhattan side of Brooklyn Bridge. A dazzling and notorious bicycle tour of lower
    Manhattan, led by a licensed NYC tour guide, and visiting the legendary Five Points, the
    world’s largest gold vault, and many more not-to-be-missed attractions.

Sunday, August 22nd

  • Environmental Tour of
    the South Bronx
     

    2:00pm. Brook Park Nature Preserve, East 141st and Brook Ave.,
    Bronx. Take a trip on the wild side with TIME’S UP! See wonderful gardens, parks, and
    rivers. Witness environmental devastation from fossil-fuel power plants, garbage transfer
    stations and wasted waterfront.

  • Greene Dragon Puppet Making 2:00pm.
    49 East Houston between Mott and Mulberry. Come and transform your
    bike into a horse, to then be used on Greene Dragon Paula Revere’s
    Ride (August 24th).

Monday, August 23rd

  • Lower Manhattan Dumpster Tour
    8:30pm.
    Washington Square Park. An evening of riding and dumpster diving. Bring a flashlight and bags or a
    trailer to carry food and assorted other booty from Soho’s most generous dumpsters.

Tuesday, August 24th

  • Paul Revere’s Ride 7:00pm.
    TIME’S UP! joins Greene Dragon to scout out the first
    Republican threat on New York City, riding down Lexington Avenue
    warning New Yorkers “The Republicans are coming!” The ride will
    stop at Madision Square Garden, where we will enlist patriots into
    the revel cause, before heading on to the High Times / FEVA party
    at Webster Hall.

Wednesday, August 25th

  • Radical Community Tour of the Lower East Side 7:00pm. Thompkin’s Square Park, southwest corner 7th St. and Ave A. Tour pivotal spots where
    the community stood up to the gentrification and corporatization of one of New York’s oldest
    and most diverse communities.
  • Lower Manhattan Dumpster Tour 8:30pm.
    Washington Square Park. An evening of riding and dumpster diving. Bring a flashlight
    and bags or a trailer to carry food and assorted other booty from Soho’s most generous
    dumpsters.

Thursday, August 26th

  • DNC to RNC NYC welcome ride 6:00pm.
    Union Square Park South. Bring banners and champagne (recently dumpstered bottles, please)
    to welcome the intrepid individuals who have spent twenty seven days marching 258 miles
    from Boston to New York just in time for the RNC.

Friday, August 27th

  • RNC Critical Mass 7:00pm.
    Union Square Park North. Ride in the Critical Mass and then come out to a huge RNC
    Group-Info-Sharing party (location TBD).

Saturday, August 28th

 
 

  • Green Apple Downtown Cycling Tour 11:00am.
    Two-hour eco-tour explores the Garden District, Greenways and riversides, composting, solar,
    and green building sites. Easy riding, 14 and under, wear a helmet. See more about our
    campaign for NYC’s urban nature at the
    Green Apple Map website. Meet at 6BC
    Botanical Garden (East 6th Street, mid-block between Aves B & C).
  • RingOut Ride 5:00pm. Albany St and West St, by the Hudson River Greenway TIME’S UP!
    joins RingOut
    to bring bikes to their bellringing, circular World Trade Center/Ground
    Zero observance. We will ride rings around the site while our bells ring
    out the old, ring in the new, ring out the false, ring in the true!
    Show up with as many bells as you can handle, including the one
    on your bike. Get your printable RingOut stickers.
  • Riverside Ride 10:00pm. Join us on bicycles or skates
    at the Columbus Circle (59th Street) entrance to Central Park for a totally safe, magical,
    evening ride in Manhattan. Like our Moonlight Rides, we’ll share the tranquillity of
    Central Park, plus we’ll add the grand vistas of the Hudson River from Riverside Park,
    including the new Greenway south of 72nd Street. This ride usually covers a bit over 10
    miles and lasts about 2 hours.

Sunday, August 29th

  • Bike Bloc in Support of UFPJ March 11:00am.
    Washington Square Park (under the arch). Join us in
    the streets of Manhattan to celebrate a different vision of our
    city and public space, a bike action in solidarity with UFPJ march.
    Meet early on Sunday to discuss plans for our first Bike Bloc.
  • Bike Bloc Reconvene 3:45pm.
    Steps of Main Public Library, 5th Ave between 41st and
    42nd. Gather together following the UFPJ march.

Tuesday, August 31th

  • Bike Bloc in Support of A31 Day of Action 4:00pm. Union Square South.
    Join us in the streets of Manhattan to celebrate a different vision of our city and public space, a bike action in solidarity with the A31 day of nonviolent direct action.
  • Bike Bloc Reconvene 6:00pm. Steps of Main Public Library, 5th Ave between 41st and 42nd.

Bike Space and Indoor Events

The TIME’S UP! Space is at 49 East Houston Street
(between Mott & Mulberry)

We are hosting meetings, workshops and free video screenings
at this space.

Bike Repair Workshops and Skillshare: Come learn basic
bike maintenance skills form our experts. Bring your bike and learn
how to fix it.
Work on basic maintenance skills & tune-up knowledge in the basement
at 6:00pm every Tuesday and Thursday.

Legal Meetings as required.

Video Screenings are usually Thursday nights at 8:00pm.
There will be a short film screened before the feature.

All events are free, but donations gladly accepted.

Brooklyn Critical Mass.

– 7:00 pm. Grand Army Plaza. A moving celebration of what our streets could be like with sustainable transportation. Brooklyn-style!

Sat., 8/14/2004:

Bike Bloc Training.

– 1:00 pm. Union Square South. Contribute to the continuing evolution of bike activism in the 21st century. A time to discuss and practice how we want to make our positive message loud and clear in the streets of New York during the RNC.
