While many cyclists take a New Year’s ride to pedal off some of the festive flab, US campaigners Time’s Up have a bigger agenda.

The New York cycling pressure group will be using their annual New Year’s Eve ride to celebrate another year in the saddle and encourage green thinking.

Time’s Up marked their 20th birthday in 2007 and are asking riders to start the New Year with a green resolution by making a pledge to reduce their carbon footprint.

The group’s NYE late night parade, taking place for the 10th year in a row, will see riders congregate in Washington Square Park at 10.30pm on Monday 31st before cycling together to Belvedere Castle in Central Park.

Although there may well be an impromptu stop on the way, the main event will be food, a dance party and fireworks in the park at midnight.

There will also be starting points in Brooklyn, Queens and elsewhere in Manhattan, with full details available on the Time’s Up website.

As with many mass rides there are normally cycling sound systems accompanying the parade, but this year there will also be live music via the Rude Mechanical Orchestra.

Time’s Up director Bill DiPaola said: “It’s a very festive ride. People are singing, screaming and cheering.”

Riders are asked to bring food and drink to share but are discouraged from spiking their water bottles with, ahem, festive spirit.
